“I Use – Esoteric Astrology and Capricorn” by T. Hasan Johnson

Capricorn is the tenth astrological sign in the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Capricornus. It is ruled by the planet Saturn, the planet of difficult lessons and discipline. In astrology, it is generally considered an earth sign, with an introverted capacity, and one of the four cardinal signs.

The capricornian symbol (seen above) “depicts ambition, intelligence, curiosity but also steadiness, and ability to thrive in inhospitable environments while the fish represents passion, spirituality, intuition, connection with soul.” The capacity of Capricorn in an esoteric context is that of the higher mind (the goat), born from the lower (the fish). As Dr. Ligon of the Aquarian Spriritual Center used to say, “If you want to understand the nature of a symbol, pay attention to what it does in the world…notice it’s qualities. That will tell you much about the quality the symbol represents.”

The fish represents the lower depths, or rather the being that is native to such depths. It actually flows quite gracefully through the lower depths, and it’s grace signifies the secret of Capricorn. It represents the conquering of the lower nature and the birth of the higher mind. Although the symbol seems to have an aspect dipped in both sides of the lower and the higher, they still both denote achievement. The fish and it’s underwater grace signify the highest quality of being in the lower, watery domain of emotion and duality.

Water in mythology, in many esoteric traditions, represents lower emotions. Thus, in the New Testament when the Christ walks on top of the ocean water, it signifies the higher, divine mind of the Christ standing above the shifting waters of the lower emotional. Here, Capricorn’s fish quality symbolizes it’s evolution below the waves, while the mountain goat represents the higher mind. Adept at hopping around on the tips of the tops of mountains, this type of goat signifies the grace of a being that is skilled in the higher mind realms. Capricorn energy, then, is the birth of the higher mind capacities in the soul. It has matured beyond lower concerns, yet is still skilled in both realms, although it has become a citizen of the higher, so to speak.

The slogan “I Use” best personifies Capricorn because it highlights the sign’s capacity for action. In Sagittarius, the soul reaches a new state of being where clear sight is achieved, but here the energy moves beyond envisioning and perceiving into the action of doing…in this capacity, using. But using what? Cap uses itself, both its background evolving out of the lower mind and it’s higher mind status to achieve whatever goal is deemed worthy.

What is important to remember when contemplating the value of this energy in the development of the soul is that Capricorn must always be tempered with compassion…as love of wisdom is great, but without the compassion to temper such new enthusiasm for higher consciousness, it lacks a much needed social value. We must strive for wisdom, but we can’t lose our love for people…
